Michael McCartney consistently strives to improve our department by giving 110% since being hired in 2013. Mike is a UC Davis alum, and an alum of the UC Davis Fire Department's Student Firefighter Program.

When a call comes in to the UC Davis Fire Department, help is only a couple minutes away — and sometimes some of the first responders are students.

At any given time, the department has 15 student firefighters, who live at the station and get firsthand experience going on calls, train with other staff, and, after two years, earn certifications that prepare them to enter the work force.

Chancellor Thanks Firefighters Who Battled Thomas Fire

The UC Davis Fire Department’s brand-new fire engine made its first visit to the Chancellor’s Residence last week, and no, there wasn’t an emergency. Chancellor Gary S. May and his wife, LeShelle, extended a breakfast invitation to the crew members who deployed to the Thomas Fire in Southern California for more than 14 days, arriving home just before the winter holiday.

 

Students Provided Unique Experience Through New Partnership with Sac Metro Fire

For nearly three years the UC Davis Fire Department (UCDFD) has partnered with Los Rios Community Colleges to provide Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification training to the UC Davis Campus and surrounding community.  Doing so has provided a rare opportunity for UCD students, preparing for careers in many medical fields, to enhance their education and gain real world experience.

Last week the opportunity for hands-on experience of program graduates took a huge step forward.

UC Davis Fire Hosts Regional Multi-Casualty Incident (MCI) Training

On May 1st, 2nd, and 5th the UC Davis Fire Department (UCDFD) hosted a regional multi-casualty incident drill put on by the West Valley Regional Fire Training Consortium (WVRFTC) aimed at helping responders prepare for an emergency that could generate a large number of injured patients all at one time.

Unitrans generously donated one of their retired buses to be rolled over on its side near the former Orchard Park student housing site for a scenario that centered around a bus rollover accident.

UCDFD Crews Train for Challenging Rescues

This week UC Davis Fire Department firefighters took the opportunity to further develop their technical rescue skills during a training evolution at Clark Pacific in Woodland, CA.

A simulated victim trapped beneath large slabs of concrete, weighing approximately 1500lbs each, provided ample opportunity for fire crews to utilize multiple tools from Truck 34. Tools such as rescue jacks (struts), airbags, cribbing, a cable come along and pry bars were used in different configurations to rescue the simulated victim.

UC Davis Recognizes Firefighter & Student Firefighter of the Year

Each year the UC Davis Fire Department (UCDFD), and other Yolo County fire agencies, get the opportunity to recognize outstanding employees.  2017's recognition for UCDFD goes to Fire Engineer Paul Rush and Student Firefighter Andrew McLauchlan for their contributions to the organization.

Paul Rush quickly established himself as a dedicated member of UCDFD when he was hired in 2011. He has consistently taken on many types of initiatives and worked tirelessly to make the department a better place.

Campus Researchers and Responders Train for Rescues in Labs

Being one of the nation’s top-tier research institutions means that some of the world’s most important science is being explored and developed in our labs and facilities every day.  The diversity, and complexity, of the research mission at UC Davis requires that the UC Davis Fire Department (UCDFD) personnel have the knowledge and skills to be ready for just about anything.

This week UCDFD responders along with our partners from EH&S, Safety Services, and campus researchers collaborated to practice a simulated rescue of a downed person in a lab.

UCDFD EMT Program Student Writes For Huffington Post

A current student in the UC Davis Fire Dept./Los Rios Community College EMT Certification Program delivered on the UCD Campus recently wrote an article about multi-agency training for large-scale emergencies that was featured on the Huffington Post.

Kathryn Barrett, Contributor and roving Photojournalist for HP got the chance to write a story as she experienced the course and the training first hand.
